Did you know you can use your IRA to start a charitable fund with us?

POSTED ON

Do you have an IRA? Are you required to take a minimum distribution? Did you know that you can use something called a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) to avoid increasing your taxable income while making charitable gifts?

If you do not need or want your IRA required minimum distribution (RMD), you can make a direct charitable transfer or QCD to the Community Foundation for the Ohio Valley to start a new fund, grow your existing fund, or support one of our focus area funds like the Food Security Fund.

In 2025, the total per person QCD limit from all IRAs is $108,000, which means that if you file taxes jointly, you and your spouse can make QCDs up to $216,000 in the tax year. The QCD limit is indexed annually for inflation.

QCDs also do not count toward the maximum charitable contribution limits for those who itemize their taxes, so you can continue to give in other ways without losing tax benefits.

To learn more about QCDs and how the Community Foundation can facilitate your charitable goals, contact Liz Paulhus, director of development & donor services, at 304-905-6084 or liz@cfov.org.
