Hello from the Community Foundation for the Ohio Valley!
Our theme this month is “Investing in Our Future.” Really, that’s what we do every month. Every contribution, every fund, every gift entrusted to CFOV is an investment in the future of the communities we serve; from Steubenville & Weirton down to Moundsville, New Martinsville & Middlebourne. While some donors find their way to us on their own, most fundholders and donors are introduced to CFOV through a trusted financial advisor, attorney, CPA, or trust officer.
That relationship is central to how much charitable good we can do together, and this month we want to take a moment to celebrate it. We call it what it is: a partnership.
What Does “Partner” Really Mean?
It’s worth pausing on the word itself. Merriam-Webster defines partner as:
- One associated with another, especially in an action — an associate or colleague
- A member of a partnership, especially in business
- One who shares in something — a partaker
As a verb, to partner means to join or associate with another, or to provide with a partner.
Notice what these definitions have in common: none of them describe working alone. Partnerships are the opposite of individuality and autonomy. It’s a relationship built on shared purpose; two areas of expertise working together toward a common goal.
That’s exactly the relationship we hope to build with professional advisors in our area.
We Want to Be a Tool in Your Toolbox
As the philanthropic experts in the Ohio Valley, with more than 50 years of combined knowledge and experience on our team, we see ourselves as your partner in philanthropy, not your competitor in it. You are the expert in law, finance, and accounting. We are the experts in charitable giving.
As attorneys, CPAs, and financial advisors, you’re already dedicated to helping your charitable clients navigate technical planning opportunities such as donor-advised funds, charitable trusts, Qualified Charitable Distributions, and gifts of complex assets. The Community Foundation is here to support that work every step of the way.
Beyond the Details: Why Context Matters
Getting the technical details right is essential. But effective charitable planning also requires something broader: context.
Charitable planning doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It exists within a rapidly evolving nonprofit sector, and a dynamic legislative and regulatory environment. Nonprofits today provide essential services, strengthen communities, advance education and healthcare, and meet needs that government and the private sector often cannot address on their own.
That’s an important reminder for advisors and clients alike: charitable planning is not simply a tax exercise. Helping a client support a charitable organization can have meaningful ripple effects for the organization, certainly, but also for the broader community and local economy.
Clients are picking up on this, too. Increasingly, they expect charitable planning to be woven into the larger fabric of their financial and estate planning conversations, not treated as a separate or secondary consideration.
Philanthropy Is Getting More Sophisticated
Charitable giving today is more sophisticated, more visible, and more interconnected with wealth transfer, retirement planning, tax planning, and legacy goals than ever before. Clients look to their trusted advisors not just for technical expertise, but for perspective, like how charitable giving fits into their overall financial picture and the legacy they want to leave.
That’s where we come in.
A Growing Conversation: Keeping Wealth Rooted in the Ohio Valley
Many of your clients have children and grandchildren who have moved away, building lives in other cities and states. That’s a reality more and more families are facing, and it often leads to a meaningful question during estate planning conversations: how do you make sure the wealth you’ve built stays connected to the community that helped you build it?
For clients who feel strongly about this, a fund at the CFOV offers a clear answer. By establishing a fund here or naming the CFOV as a beneficiary in a will, trust, or other estate plan, your clients can ensure their charitable legacy continues to benefit the Ohio Valley for generations, regardless of where their heirs ultimately settle. It’s a way to honor both family and community: heirs can still be included in the giving story and even help carry it forward, while the impact of the gift remains anchored right here at home.
As you work with clients on these decisions, we’re here as a resource to help structure gifts that reflect their values and keep their philanthropy local.
The Bottom Line: Context Matters
By partnering with the Community Foundation, you gain a resource that stays current on the trends, research, and legislative developments shaping the nonprofit sector and charitable giving. Our team keeps a close eye on the intersection of charitable planning, estate planning, and wealth management, so you don’t have to track it alone.
Together, we can help your clients achieve more than just their tax and estate planning goals. We can help them achieve their goals for community impact, leaving the Ohio Valley stronger for generations to come.
That’s an investment worth making every month of the year.
