The philanthropic legacy of Helen and Leonard Rowley continues to resonate in the Ohio Valley, embodied by the Helen and Leonard Rowley Memorial Fund at the Community Foundation for the Ohio Valley. Since 2005, this fund has been a testament to the Rowleys’ lifelong commitment to their cherished causes, seamlessly continuing their support even after their passing.
Leonard found his call to service through the U.S. Naval Seabees during World War II. His experiences as an industrial electrician and a Seabee, where he contributed to significant wartime construction projects, shaped his view of service and giving back. The Seabees’ motto, “We Build, We Fight,” encapsulated Leonard’s ethos, which he carried throughout his life and into his philanthropy.

Helen, a secretary at Hazel-Atlas Glass Company, shared Leonard’s devotion to community service. Known for her skills in knitting and her volunteer work at Wheeling Hospital, Helen’s kindness and generosity were as boundless as her husband’s. Together, they enjoyed simpler pleasures, like fishing trips to Canada and capturing life’s moments through Leonard’s photography.
The Rowleys were pillars of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, where their faith and community spirit found a home. Their philanthropic journey, encapsulated in the Rowley Fund, has supported diverse organizations, from the Seabee Museum in Mississippi to the Episcopal Diocese of West Virginia, reflecting their broad interests and unwavering commitment to community welfare.
The Rowleys’ story is one of commitment to causes close to their hearts. Their fund ensures that their passions – from supporting veterans to preserving religious and cultural heritage – live on, impacting countless lives.
The Community Foundation for the Ohio Valley can help others create a lasting legacy. Through donor-designated funds like the Rowley Fund, the spirit of giving thrives, allowing individuals to contribute meaningfully to the causes they hold dear, forever.
